Tangled Rapunzel Costume Tutorial

J was invited to a princess birthday party last week. At first, she said she would

go as Cinderella, but as I took a closer look at the Cinderella gown (below),

I realized that we really had to come up with something else.

She has already decided on Disney's Tangled as a theme for her birthday (which is in 7 months!)

(update: read about the Rapunzel birthday party HERE)

so I was probably going to have to make her a Rapunzel costume at some point anyway.

I figured I'd get a head start.

We decided to go for the Barbie Rapunzel look.

I used one of J's T-shirts as a guide for size to draw the pattern of the top/bodice.

Click here to download the pdf of the pattern. It is a 5T.

Sleeves

Pin ribbon to the sleeves.

I used about 2 meters of ribbon.

and topstitch.

Front

(cut one of Front and and 2 of Bodice pattern pieces)

Fold centers of bodice pieces in.

Pin in place.

Serge or zig zag pieces together.

Seal ribbon edges.

Fold ribbon in half and place between the two layers of fabric.

Topstitch.

Lace up by threading through the ribbon loops.

Back

Sew velcro onto back pieces.

Make sure the velcro pieces are aligned properly.

Sew front and back pieces together, right-sides together.

Pin lace to collar edge.

Fold lace back and topstitch around.

Gather the sleeves using a long stitch and high tension.

Pin sleeves into place.

and stitch around.

For the underskirt, I cut out two pieces about 60 x 60 cm each.

Sew side seams of underskirt by sewing the two pieces together, right-sides together.

Make a casing leaving an opening to thread the elastic through.

Stitch elastic ends together.

Close opening of casing.

Sew lace to the bottom of the skirt (on wrong side of skirt).

Fold down lace and topstitch on right side of skirt.

Create a cuff for the sleeves.

For the overskirt, use 3 pieces of fabric:

one piece: 60 x 60 cm (wide piece, back)

two pieces: 30 (width) x 60 (length) cm each (thin pieces, front panels)

Sew one thin piece on either side of the wide piece (right sides together both times)

At this point you can hem the lengths of the thin pieces, where the two front panels

will meet in the front of the dress.

Gather overskirt to match the width of the bodice.

Make sure to align the side seams of the bodice and the overskirt.

Pin overskirt onto bodice, right sides together.

Hand stitch the hem of the overskirt.

Sew lace trim onto the bottom of the bodice.

Braid hair,

add flowers,

and go run in the grass barefoot...

unless the weather where you are is like ours this week....

in which case I would recommend shoes (or ice skates)
